Police Shoot Dog After Officer Bitten During Impaired Driving Arrest in Owen Sound
Police shot a dog after it attacked an officer during an impaired driving arrest in Owen Sound. A 41-year-old driver was charged, his licence suspended, and vehicle impounded.
A dog was shot and killed by city police Saturday evening after it attacked officers during an impaired driving arrest in Owen Sound.
The incident began around 7:20 p.m. Saturday, when a member of the public contacted police to report a pickup truck being driven erratically in the area of 16th Street East, according to the Owen Sound Police Service.
The caller reported the vehicle striking curbs and failing to obey traffic controls.
Officers located the white pickup a short time later and stopped it in the 1900 block of 17th Street East.
Officer Bitten During Arrest
Police administered a roadside screening test to the driver, which indicated alcohol in his system. When officers moved to arrest him, a dog inside the truck attacked one of the officers, biting them several times.
A second officer intervened and the dog released the officer. Police say the animal then charged toward a third officer. Fearing for their safety, the officer fired their service pistol, killing the dog.
The injured officer was transported to hospital by ambulance, received treatment for the bite injuries, and was later released.
Police said the dog appeared to resemble an American Bulldog, though the breed could not be confirmed.
Driver Charged & Vehicle Impounded
A 41-year-old Owen Sound man was taken to the police station following the arrest, where breath tests were conducted by a qualified technician.
According to police, the results showed alcohol levels above the legal limit.
He has been charged with impaired operation and operation with over 80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood.
Police say the accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in Owen Sound court on April 16, 2026.
His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days, and the vehicle involved was impounded for seven days.
