Police Charge Owen Sound Man Involved in Downtown Brawl Captured On Video
One man has been charged and Owen Sound Police continue reviewing evidence after a downtown altercation involving several people was captured on video and shared to social media.

A 35-year-old Owen Sound man is facing an assault charge after a downtown altercation that was captured on video and has circulated widely on social media.
The video, reviewed by Owen Sound Current, appears to show as many as nine people actively involved in the melee at one point.
Just before midnight on April 21, 2026, Owen Sound Police Service responded to reports of a disturbance on a downtown street involving several individuals.
According to police, an on-duty security guard who was in the area checking a nearby building observed the incident and attempted to intervene and mediate the situation.
During that intervention, the guard was allegedly headbutted and repeatedly punched.
Police say other individuals at the scene assisted in pulling the accused away from the victim before officers arrived.
Both the accused and the victim sustained minor injuries, were treated medically, and released.
As a result of the investigation, a 35-year-old Owen Sound man was arrested and charged with assault. He is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice on July 16, 2026.
In a media release issued Wednesday, Owen Sound Police said they are aware of video footage of the incident that has circulated widely on social media. Police say the incident has been investigated and officers continue to gather and review all available evidence.
Owen Sound Current has reviewed the video, and the Facebook page where it was posted.
The video appears to show a chaotic altercation involving multiple people, with several individuals seen physically engaging with one another at different points.
The page, which uses a generic city-related name, first posted on April 13, 2026 and had amassed more than 1,400 followers at the time of publication.
The page does not list contact information or identify the individual operating it. An inquiry sent by Owen Sound Current through Facebook Messenger was not answered before publication.
The unidentified page administrator has made claims about who appears in the street fight video that Owen Sound Current has not been able to independently verify.
Over a dozen photos and videos of people have posted to the page, filmed from a vantage point that appears to be an upper-floor location above Central Variety, Safe ’N Sound, or the former Hewett & Milne surveyors office.
Some posts on the page include captions that appear to mock people experiencing addiction or homelessness, with particular focus on individuals outside the Safe ’N Sound shelter. Other posts and comments make allegations about drug activity connected to the organization.
In a post on April 18, screenshots of the page’s engagement metrics were shared with the caption: “The more engagement the more this puts pressure on something that need BIG CHANGE!” suggesting the operator may view the page as a form of advocacy.
Updated: Shortly after publishing, Safe ‘N Sound responded to our inquiries.
Rachel Paterson, board chair for Safe ‘N Sound, said no staff were involved in the incident in the video footage being circulated online.
“Safe ‘N Sound utilizes local security guards to support primary workers as needed during staff shortages. Our centre operates with 3 staff on-site 24 hours during our warming centre operations,” Paterson added.
Paterson also noted that the organization practices the principles of de-escalation and non-violent intervention methods when dealing with “escalated individuals.”
“As this is of such importance to our centre, we begin staff training in October prior to our Overnight Program operations,” Paterson explained, noting that the training includes training focused on non-violent intervention by understanding and managing aggressive behaviours (known as UMAB training).
