Owen Sound Man Charged with Careless Driving Causing Death in February Crosswalk Collision
A 66-year-old Owen Sound man faces a careless driving causing death charge after 48-year-old Sabrina Ormsby was struck in a crosswalk on Feb. 17 and died soon after in a London trauma centre.
Owen Sound Police Service announced Friday that an Owen Sound man has been charged with careless driving causing death in connection with the February 17 collision that killed 48-year-old Sabrina Ormsby.
The unnamed 66-year old man is alleged to have struck Ormsby in the crosswalk at the intersection of 10th Street East and 16th Avenue East, as she crossed the road with her oldest child, a teenaged daughter.
The pair had just departed Brightshores Owen Sound Hospital after visiting Ormsby’s father in hospital, and planned to walk home.
According to police, she was struck by a pickup truck turning northbound onto 16th Avenue East from 10th Street. Her daughter, uninjured, called 911 and was soon joined by an off-duty nurse and a nursing student who administered CPR.
Ormsby was transported to a London trauma centre but succumbed to her injuries.
OSPS said they wished to thank members of the public who came forward with information during the investigation. They noted that the man is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Provincial Offences Court in April 2026.
Careless driving causing death is a serious provincial offence under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act with tough penalties but no criminal record.
If convicted, the man faces a fine between $2000 to $50,000, imprisonment up to two years, a license suspension of up to five years, and the possibility of six demerit points, a victim surcharge, and major insurance consequences.
