Owen Sound Man Arrested Twice in 24 Hours, Faces Nine Charges
Owen Sound police arrested a man twice in under 24 hours; he now faces nine charges, including vehicle theft and impaired driving.
An Owen Sound man is facing nine Criminal Code charges after being arrested twice in less than 24 hours, the Owen Sound Police Service says.
According to police, the sequence began on June 28, when officers received a complaint that a family member had stolen a vehicle after drinking to the point of intoxication.
Officers located the vehicle in the city and attempted a traffic stop, but police say the driver sped off, disobeyed traffic signals and posed a significant danger to himself and others. Officers did not pursue the vehicle, citing public safety.
The same man was later captured on store video allegedly stealing alcohol from a local business, police say. He was arrested near his residence after a foot pursuit and held for a bail hearing.
On June 29, police say the same store reported a second theft, and that video again identified the same man. He was located a short distance away and arrested again — less than a day after the first arrest.
In total, the man faces nine Criminal Code offences, police say, including theft of a motor vehicle; impaired operation of a motor vehicle; operating a motor vehicle with 80 milligrams or more of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood; dangerous driving; theft under $5,000; and assaulting a police officer with intent to resist arrest.
He also faces multiple charges under the Highway Traffic Act and the Liquor Licence and Control Act.
None of the allegations has been tested in court. The accused, who was not named by police, is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
