Owen Sound Begins Major Rehabilitation of 27th Street West Pump Station
Owen Sound is beginning upgrades at the 27th Street West sanitary pump station on September 10, with about $750,000 budgeted to the infrastructure project through 2028.
The City of Owen Sound will begin a major infrastructure project this week to modernize the sanitary pump station at 200 27th Street West.
Work is scheduled to start on Wednesday, September 10, with upgrades aimed at improving the reliability of wastewater service for residents in the area.
The project is part of the City’s multi-year capital plan and carries a budget allocation of about $740,000 to $750,000 spread over several years.
That includes $70,000 identified in 2025, roughly $650,000 planned for 2026, and smaller amounts of $10,000 each in 2027 and 2028.
Upgrades at the pump station will replace aging equipment with updated systems, including a new duplex pump control panel with automated monitoring and remote communication.
These features are designed to reduce the risk of service disruptions and allow City crews to respond more quickly if problems occur.
Bypass pumping systems will be in place during construction to ensure wastewater service is not interrupted.
Additional improvements include new access controls and better ventilation for worker safety, along with technology to provide improved overflow protection for local waterways.
The City’s most recent wastewater performance report noted that the 27th Street West pump station has previously experienced operational challenges, including a power failure in 2024 that required emergency generator use and an overflow event during heavy rainfall.
While the rehabilitation was already identified in the City’s long-term capital plan, the report provides context for the infrastructure’s age and the importance of modernization.
The City says residents will be notified in advance of any temporary construction impacts in the neighbourhood.
