Over 300 Bruce-Grey Households Receive Utility Assistance Thanks to Community Support
Between July 2024 and June 2025, United Way’s Utility Assistance Program helped 751 people in Bruce and Grey stay connected to heat and electricity with nearly $184,000 in grants.
Data released by United Way of Bruce Grey shows that 302 households across the region received financial assistance through its Utility Assistance Program between July 2024 and June 2025 — and the number of seniors in need of support is growing.
The program provided a total of $183,973 in grants to help residents remain connected to essential heating and electricity services. According to the figures, 751 people were supported during the 12-month reporting period.
Breakdown of support by utility type:
Electricity: 88 households | $47,295
Natural Gas: 25 households | $3,977
Furnace Oil: 22 households | $15,400
Propane: 55 households | $38,440
Wood: 102 households | $73,216
United Way noted that the number of seniors assisted this year was approximately double that of the previous year. The program is intended to help low- and moderate-income households avoid disconnection or fuel shortages during periods of high cost or usage, particularly in winter months.
Support is provided through a combination of local fundraising and agency partnerships. Eligibility is determined through an application process.
