OPP Warns: Holiday Garbage Can Be a Gift to Thieves
As post-holiday waste hits curbs across Grey-Bruce, OPP urges residents to keep their packaging discreet. Here's what police are saying about staying safe this season.
With the holiday season wrapping up, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are reminding residents to be cautious when placing post-Christmas waste at the curb—especially packaging from high-value gifts.
The warning, issued by the OPP’s West Region Headquarters, highlights a seasonal trend where thieves may scout neighbourhoods looking for signs of recent, expensive purchases. Boxes from electronics, appliances, or other big-ticket items left out for collection can act as an open invitation, making homes a target for break-ins.
To reduce the risk of property crime, the OPP recommends the following steps:
Avoid advertising your new purchases. If possible, take large boxes—like those from TVs or gaming consoles—directly to a recycling depot.
Break down boxes before putting them out, turn them inside out, and reduce their size.
Shred receipts and financial documents before disposal.
Secure your garbage and recycling bins if you’re going to be away, or have a trusted person bring them in.
Police are also offering broader safety tips as part of their post-holiday crime prevention efforts:
Pick up mail promptly. If you’re travelling, have a neighbour or friend collect it for you.
Avoid posting new gifts on social media.
Make your home appear lived-in when you’re away by using timers on lights and arranging for snow clearing if needed.
Always lock your home and vehicles. Theft from unlocked cars and homes continues to be a common issue.
The OPP says that by taking a few simple precautions, residents can help protect themselves from becoming victims of property crime this season.
