OPP Lay Dozens of Charges in Grey-Bruce Over Easter Long Weekend
Local OPP detachments report enforcement results from the Easter long weekend, with seatbelt, speeding, and impaired driving charges.
Police in Grey-Bruce laid dozens of charges over the Easter long weekend as part of a broader seatbelt enforcement campaign across southwestern Ontario.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say local detachments were active between April 3 and April 6, targeting seatbelt use alongside other high-risk driving behaviours.
Local Enforcement Results
Detachment-level results show a range of charges in Grey-Bruce:
Grey Bruce OPP

25 seatbelt charges
1 distracted driving charge
2 impaired driving charges
South Bruce OPP
36 speeding charges
7 seatbelt charges
3 distracted driving charges
2 impaired driving charges
Police did not release details about where or when specific incidents occurred.
Fewer Charges Across West Region
Across the OPP’s West Region, officers laid 168 charges under Ontario’s seatbelt law during the campaign. That’s down from 338 charges in 2025, which had marked a five-year high.
The campaign is part of an annual effort combining education and enforcement aimed at improving compliance with seatbelt laws.
Why Seatbelts Remain a Focus
Police say failure to wear a seatbelt continues to be a factor in fatal collisions.
According to the OPP, 41 people died last year on OPP-patrolled roads in crashes where seatbelt use was a contributing factor. Fourteen of those deaths occurred in West Region.
So far in 2026, four traffic deaths in West Region have already been linked to failure to wear a seatbelt.
Seatbelt use is considered one of several key factors in road safety, alongside impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving, and driver fatigue.
Ongoing Enforcement
Police say enforcement will continue beyond targeted campaigns, with a focus on reducing preventable injuries and deaths on Ontario roads.
