One year after its release, Gwen Lamont’s memoir “The View From Coffin Ridge: A Childhood Exhumed” is going into its ninth printing, the first draft of the screenplay for a feature-length motion picture has been completed, and countless women have shared messages of how Lamont’s story has impacted their lives.
Since the first two launches at Coffin Ridge, 18 launches have been held in Goderich, Lion’s Head, Parry Sound, Kincardine, Southampton, Collingwood, Hanover, Stratford, Colpoy’s Bay, Markdale, Owen Sound, Ottawa, Arnprior, St. Mary’s and London (2). Over 925 people have attended.
Fifty-eight community guests have been part of these launches, including municipal councillors, police officers, and representatives from women’s centres and youth support groups. Their presence helps to ignite important conversations with community leaders. To date, the author has donated to 29 organizations that provide support to women, youth, and families.
On May 31, over 100 invited guests who have supported the book in numerous ways and promoted its launches throughout Ontario gathered at Coffin Ridge Winery to celebrate its first anniversary.
Gwen's book tells quite a story. For over thirty years, her childhood memories had been buried. Once those years were over, she never spoke of them. No one knew of her chaotic, poor family. No one knew she had been a child bride, or of her close brush with death at the hands of a man who claimed to love her.
Gwen didn't finish grade 9 but today, she holds four degrees. The research for her Master of Social Work thesis took her into prisons, where she interviewed men who had killed their intimate partner. That research is available on her website.
The book, published by Ginger Press, is available at 17 independent bookstores across Ontario and Nova Scotia. Locally, it can be purchased at Coffin Ridge Winery and at Ginger Press Bookshop or website.
Upcoming launches are scheduled for Peterborough on June 11, Meaford on July 18 and Red Bay on August 20th. Tickets are available at gwenlamontauthor.ca.
