One Arrested After Vehicle Theft & Garage Incident in Grey Highlands on New Year’s Eve
A 50-year-old with no fixed address has been charged after a garage was entered and a cargo van was stolen in Grey Highlands on December 31. Grey Bruce OPP made the arrest after a brief foot chase.
A series of events on New Year’s Eve led to a police pursuit and arrest in Grey Highlands, after a resident discovered property damage in their garage and a cargo van was reported stolen nearby.
It began shortly before noon on December 31, when Grey Bruce OPP responded to a report from a homeowner who had found someone had entered their garage. A vehicle cover had been damaged, but the intruder was no longer on the scene.
While officers were still investigating at the property, a second report came in just after 12:30 p.m. — this time from a nearby address. A white 2013 cargo van had been stolen.
Police began searching the area and quickly located the van at the intersection of Main Street and Scotland Street in Grey Highlands.
According to police, a person was seen in the driver’s seat but fled on foot as officers approached. The individual was arrested shortly afterward, following a brief foot pursuit.
Tracey Johnstone, 50, of no fixed address, has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle, mischief under $5,000, and theft over $5,000.
Johnstone was held for a bail hearing and remanded into custody following an appearance in the Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound on January 1.
Police have not said whether the person is known to the homeowners or whether any additional charges are expected.
