Officials Warn Against Illegal Use of Motorized Vehicles on Public Lands
Officials in Bruce and Grey counties are warning against illegal motorized vehicle use on public lands, citing environmental damage and promising increased enforcement in 2025.

Officials from Bruce County, Grey County, Grey Sauble Conservation Authority, and Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority are warning residents and visitors to respect public lands and follow the rules surrounding motorized vehicle use.
Unauthorized activity is causing significant environmental and financial damage, they say—and enforcement is increasing.
In a joint message, the counties and conservation authorities are urging individuals to “know where you are” before using any off-road vehicles on trails, beaches, forests, or conservation lands. Use of ATVs, dirt bikes, trucks, and even golf carts in areas not designated for motorized access is prohibited and harmful.
The misuse is leading to eroded slopes, deep ruts, crushed vegetation, and damaged habitats. In addition to disrupting ecosystems and spreading invasive species, officials say these actions divert limited funds away from recreation and accessibility improvements.
“Every dollar spent on repairs is a dollar not spent on recreation,” the release states. Costs associated with restoring damaged areas fall on municipalities and conservation authorities, limiting their ability to invest in public infrastructure and programs.
“Most people would never assume they have the right to drive through a neighbour’s yard without permission,” said Donna Lacey, Manager of Forestry and Lands with Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority. “That same courtesy needs to extend to the shared lands we all enjoy. Respect these unique and beautiful spaces; stay out.”
Officials emphasize that if a location is not explicitly marked or designated for off-road vehicle use, it is off-limits. This includes all county and conservation lands unless otherwise posted. Riders are encouraged to check official websites and signage before accessing any trail systems.
To address ongoing violations, enforcement efforts will increase across the region in 2025. Those found operating motorized vehicles illegally may face fines, vehicle impoundment, or charges under municipal bylaws and provincial legislation.
Bruce County, Grey County, Grey Sauble Conservation Authority, and Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority are working together to protect public spaces for all users. They ask that everyone help by respecting the rules, protecting natural habitats, and riding responsibly.
