Northern Bruce Peninsula Man Charged with Impaired Driving at RIDE Checkpoint
A 61-year-old man faces impaired driving and licence suspension charges after being stopped at a RIDE program in Northern Bruce Peninsula on December 23.
A 61-year-old man from Northern Bruce Peninsula is facing impaired driving charges after being stopped at a RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) checkpoint conducted by Grey Bruce OPP on the evening of December 23, 2025.
According to police, officers were operating the holiday-season roadside safety program at the intersection of Highway 6 and Bruce Road 9 in the Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula when a vehicle entered the checkpoint shortly after 10:00 p.m.
Officers say they detected signs of impairment when speaking with the driver. The individual was arrested at the scene and taken to the local OPP detachment for further testing.
As a result, William Mervyn, 61, of Northern Bruce Peninsula, has been charged with operation while impaired, operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (B.A.C.) 80 plus, and driving while suspended.
Police also issued a 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (ADLS) and impounded the vehicle for seven days, as required under provincial law.
Mervyn was released from custody and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound on January 15, 2026.
The OPP continues to emphasize the dangers and consequences of impaired driving, particularly during the holiday season. Residents are encouraged to report suspected impaired drivers by calling 911 in emergencies or 1-888-310-1122 for non-urgent concerns.
