Neighbours 4 Palestine to Gather at Grey-Bruce-Owen Sound MP's Office for National Day of Action
Local group advocating for changes in federal law to reduce the flow of Canadian-made military components reaching Israel and other conflict zones asks for action from local MP.
SUBMITTED
On Tuesday, February 17, from noon to 1:00 p.m., members of the community will gather outside our Member of Parliament’s office as part of a national day of action organized by Arms Embargo Now, calling on MPs to support Bill C-233, the No More Loopholes Act.
Over the next few months, Canadians have a rare opportunity to change federal law in a way that could significantly reduce the flow of Canadian-made military components reaching Israel and other conflict zones through what is commonly known as the “U.S. loophole.”
This loophole allows Canadian weapons parts to be exported to the United States and then re-exported elsewhere without meaningful Canadian oversight.
On Friday, September 19, MP Jenny Kwan introduced Bill C-233 to close dangerous gaps in Canada’s arms export laws. Later this month, this will be put to vote, however, the bill will only pass if Members of Parliament hear clearly from their constituents and are willing to act.
Our local MP, Alex Ruff, recently stated on the radio: “I will take all of this into consideration as I listen to the second hour of debate on Bill C-233 and when I discuss this bill with my colleagues.”
This makes it a critical moment for members of our community to demonstrate that there is strong local support for closing these loopholes.
Signs will be available at the demonstration, and participants are also welcome to bring their own. This peaceful action is about accountability, transparency, and ensuring Canadian law aligns with our human rights commitments.
