Municipality Issues Scam Alert As Fraudulent Calls Claim to Represent SBP Fire Department
Residents are warned of a phone scam falsely claiming to represent the South Bruce Peninsula Fire Department. The Town confirms no phone donations are ever requested.
The Town of South Bruce Peninsula is warning residents about a phone scam in which individuals are falsely claiming to represent the South Bruce Peninsula Fire Department and soliciting donations.
According to a statement from Danielle Edwards, Manager of Economic Development & Corporate Communications, residents have reported receiving calls requesting $500 donations via credit card or e-transfer. These calls are fraudulent.
The South Bruce Peninsula Fire Department does not solicit donations by phone, and has confirmed that it would never request money from residents in this manner. Official fundraising efforts have only ever been conducted through partnerships with local community businesses.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have been notified. Residents who receive such calls are advised not to share any personal or financial information. Incidents should be reported to the OPP non-emergency line at 1-888-310-1122, or to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
