Municipal Candidate Lists Grow Across Owen Sound & Bruce-Grey With Two Months Left to File
New municipal election candidate filings across Bruce and Grey counties have turned several quiet races into contests, while Northern Bruce Peninsula still has no one registered.
Candidates have until August 21 to put their names forward for the October 26 municipal election, and with two months left in that window, the ballots taking shape across Owen Sound and Grey-Bruce are still far from full.
Nominations opened May 1. When we last surveyed the field in late May, much of it sat empty; there was no deputy mayor candidate in Owen Sound, lone names atop several mayoral races, and whole council benches without a single contender.
Several of those races have since drawn new candidates. A handful of seats still have none.
Owen Sound’s deputy mayor seat now a registered candidate. Incumbent Deputy Mayor Scott Greig has filed to run again in the hopes of keeping his seat for the next four-year term.
The city’s council field has grown as well, though it remains thin. Thomas Arakal and Jacob Morris-Wheeler have joined Meghan Robertson, who stood as the only registered council candidate at the end of May. Owen Sound elects seven councillors in addition to the mayor and deputy.
The mayor’s race has not changed since our last report. Ray Botten, Jodi King, Carol Merton, Richard Thomas and Andrii Zvorygin remain the five contenders. Nominations remain open until August 21 at 4:30 p.m., and the certified candidate list will be published September 1.
Read on for updates and candidate lists from each municipality in Grey and Bruce counties.
Grey County: Contests Open in Blue Mountains and Grey Highlands
Two mayoral races have become contests since late May. In The Blue Mountains, Peter Bordignon joined Marni Moreau, and in Grey Highlands, Paul McQueen joined Dane Nielsen. Both seats had a single registered candidate on the earlier list.
The Blue Mountains council field also expanded sharply, from one candidate to four: Brayden DeWitt, Rachel Gilliland, Shawn McKinlay and June Porter.
Meaford filled its deputy mayor seat, previously empty, with Robert Uhrig, and added Tony Bell and Brandon Forder to a council field that already included Eric Ennis and Adam Vaughan. Meaford’s list is current to June 4 — the most recent of any municipality tracked here.
Hanover, which had no council candidates in late May, now has two: Siobhan Hanley and David Hocking.
Elsewhere in Grey County, the lists are unchanged. Georgian Bluffs, Chatsworth, West Grey and Southgate show no new names since our last report.

Bruce County: Kincardine and Brockton Lead the New Filings
Kincardine saw the most movement. The deputy mayor seat drew Rory Cavanagh, the at-large council race drew Mike Hinchberger and Darrel Perry, and Amanda Steinhoff-Gray filed in Ward 3 — all positions that sat empty earlier.
Brockton’s council field grew from one to four, with Mike Crawford, Christine Robinson and Justin Hoffarth joining Steve Travale.
In Saugeen Shores, David Myette filed for vice deputy mayor, and Brenda Reeves joined the Southampton ward council race. The deputy mayor seat remains open.
Arran-Elderslie filled its deputy mayor seat with Jennifer Shaw. Huron-Kinloss added Carl Sloetjes to its council field. In South Bruce, Rita Groen and Nigel Van Dyk filed for the at-large council seats — but the Mildmay-Carrick ward, which had one registered candidate in late May, now has none after a withdrawal.
Two gaps persist. Northern Bruce Peninsula still has no registered candidates for any office. And South Bruce Peninsula’s list has not been updated since May 20, so any changes there are not yet reflected.
