Reports of Multiple Gunshots in Meaford Led to Lockdown on Wednesday
September 4 reports follow complaints of gunshots in the same area on August 27
Grey Bruce OPP have revealed more information about what instigated Wednesday’s shelter-in-place order and public school lockdown.
Police say they received a report at approximately 1:00 p.m. on September 4 that several gunshots had been heard coming from a bush area near the Victoria Village housing complex. It was the second report of gunfire in the area in less than 10 days.
On August 27 at 12:35 p.m., residents in the Victoria Village area reported hearing four or five gunshots.
The Owen Sound Current received a photo from two sources of the same window of a home on Victoria Street that appears to have been damaged by a bullet.
Grey Bruce OPP said they established a containment area and had the OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT) and the OPP Canine Unit join in the investigation after both calls.
At 1:32 p.m. on Wednesday, OPP announced there was an increased police presence in the area of Victoria Street, Ridge Road, Susan Street and St. Andrews Drive in Meaford. Residents were asked to either avoid the area or stay in their homes.
School pickup at Georgian Bay Community School was cancelled until police cleared the order later in the afternoon.
Police confirm they did not find any evidence during these searches and have not located a suspect.
Grey Bruce OPP says they will be doing extra patrols around the clock in the area. Officers and auxiliary members will be out canvassing the neighbourhood for witnesses and video surveillance on September 7 and 8.
Police are asking area residents to check their video surveillance systems, dashcams, or doorcams for footage on August 27th, 2024, around 12:35 p.m. and September 4th, 2024, around 1:00 p.m.
