Happy Monday, readers. Last week, we asked for your thoughts on whether the City of Owen Sound should fund the Centennial Tower repairs required to restore it to a safe condition, allowing for public access once again.
Overall, 61% said yes, though the conditions under which taxpayers would fund the repairs varied.
Over a third of respondents believed the City should fund Centennial Tower repairs from the tax levy in perpetuity, fulfilling the promise made to local students decades ago (despite the lack of a written agreement, as City staff highlighted at the recent capital planning meeting).
Fifteen percent said it should be funded just this time, while 12% would only support the City funding a portion of it, with the rest coming from fundraising or other sources.
Meanwhile, 30% of respondents said they do not support using the tax levy for the project at all.
While this reader poll is not a scientific survey, it offers a snapshot of public opinion. Centennial Tower has been added to the City’s capital plan as an unfunded project, meaning no funding source has yet been confirmed.
Residents who wish to share their views on the future of the tower can contact members of City Council directly as the discussion continues.
