Welcome back, Readers. We begin this week — and the month of June — with a love letter to Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound, set to music.

Owen Sound's James Harris (who many readers will recognize as the Ontario NDP candidate in the February 2025 provincial election) released a song this weekend sharing his love of Grey-Bruce, with a nod to some of the lore that comes with it. Harris wrote and performed the track himself.

“Everyday a Strong Heart” will take you on a road trip. Up Highway 10 “about as far as it will go,” through Southgate, down Highway 6 “through the drumlands and plowed fields, through the forests and the trees.” A right turn off 6 toward Desboro, a left at County 3, and into Paisley where “all the waters come together to flow as one / Known as the mighty Saugeen.”

Harris takes the long way around, naming the corners and crossroads — the Checker Board Corners, Purple Valley, the White Cliffs of the Cape — and gives Neyaashiinigmiing and Saugeen their due in Anishinaabemowin: Chi miigwetch for all it's been / Pane naadmooshin jizoongde'eyaan / You've been here from the start.

And then, with the kind of affectionate wink only a local can pull off, he closes by tipping his hat to one of the region's more enduring stories. If you know, you know. And if you don't… well, that's the joke. Check it out:
