That little patch of grass between the sidewalk and the road – the hell strip, as it’s commonly known – can be a valuable habitat for pollinators and add aesthetic appeal to neighbourhoods.

These boulevard gardens are one example of public spaces beautified and maintained by residents. It’s a trend that’s catching on across Ontario.

Yet in Owen Sound, a $600 fee stands in the way.

In her latest column, master gardener Jennifer Deeks explores what grows well in this space, how they benefit our climate and environmental goals, and what other cities are doing to encourage boulevard gardens.
