Good morning,
The Sharif Rahman case closed in an Owen Sound courtroom on Friday, with Robert Evans Jr. sentenced to three and a half years for the punch that killed a well-liked and respected member of our community.
That’s the last of the three men to be dealt with by the courts, and the end of a case that ran nearly three years and crossed an ocean.
Today’s edition begins with a letter from Scotland. Alec Harley writes about a night his family spent at The Curry House years ago with nine hungry travellers, an improvised feast, and a man who came out of the kitchen to make them welcome.
Alec learned how Sharif died from the BBC, and wrote to us to share his memories of that night and his condolences to Sharif’s family and friends.
We’ve also built a complete coverage page: every story we’ve run on the case, from the first one asking what had happened to him, through the arrests in Scotland, the extradition fight in Edinburgh, and the sentencing hearings here at home.
It’s the most complete record of this case, and it’s now in one place.
For nearly three years, we’ve been careful about what we published and when, because there were charges before the courts and a trial that might still have happened. That’s over now.
If you knew Sharif — if you ate at The Curry House, if you worked with him in the community, if you were downtown that night, if you have something you’ve been holding onto — we’d like to hear from you. Letters, memories, what you want people to know about the investigation or the result… write to us at owensoundcurrenteditor@gmail.com.
In the meantime, read on for your weather, obituaries, local event listings and news from across the region.
