Local students made the news on CBC this weekend — but you wouldn’t know it if you rely on Facebook for your headlines.
One year after Meta blocked news content in response to the Online News Act, an independent study found that 75% of Canadians still didn’t know the ban exists, even though it’s had a measurable impact. Fewer people are consuming reliable news, and those who do are increasingly turning to less factual, more biased sources.
The result? Fewer informed citizens, and a greater risk of misinformation shaping public opinion.
Good thing you can still get a full helping of local news every weekday morning by email.
We’re committed to keeping some content free and open for all, like community contributions, letters to the editor, and public notices. Inside our subscriber-only section, each issue of The Owen Sound Current includes original reporting, local event listings, and curated headlines from trusted local, regional, and national sources — so you get the complete picture.
