Local Potters and Restaurants Team Up for Empty Bowls Event on Sept 22
More than 100 handmade bowls and soups from five restaurants will highlight the Peninsula Empty Bowls fundraiser September 22 in support of the Bruce Peninsula Community Food Bank.
More than 100 handmade bowls are ready for this year’s Peninsula Empty Bowls fundraiser, set for Monday, September 22. Proceeds from the event will support the Bruce Peninsula Community Food Bank (BPCFB), which provides food and meal programs for local households.
The event gives ticket holders a chance to pick a handcrafted bowl, then sample soups from five area restaurants.
After trying the soups, guests can vote for their favourite in the People’s Choice competition with an additional donation. Bowls can be taken home, and additional pieces from local potters will also be available by donation.
This year’s soups will be prepared by Green Door Cafe, DeJong Acres, The Dunes, Lazlo’s, and Red Bay Lodge. Bread will be supplied by Crust & Crackle and Boon Bakery.
The bowls themselves come from a wide group of local potters, including Gleason Brook Pottery, Full Circle Ceramics, Gayle Fairchild, Michelle Minke, Richard Mund, Murray Fox, Nancy McGee, Barb McNeil, and members of the Georgian Bay School for the Arts.
According to organizers, the support of sponsors—including Lake House Bath + Kitchen, Home Hardware, Cottage Crafters, and George Funeral Home—means all proceeds from ticket sales, voting donations, and bowl purchases go directly to the BPCFB.
The food bank says it currently supports an average of 108 households per month. Over the past year, it distributed more than 34,000 kilograms of food, provided 174 meals per month during the school year, and supplied over 200 healthy lunches each week through the Grub Hub program.
Tickets for Peninsula Empty Bowls are available at Josie’s in Wiarton and Unique Pieces in Sauble Beach. Organizers say quantities are limited.
