Letter: Offloading or Shutting Art Gallery Would Be Huge Mistake
"We are extremely fortunate the City is home to an art gallery of such high caliber."
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
I was alarmed that Jim Hutton is proposing the City cut loose the Tom Thomson gallery or shut it down.
The art gallery is a valuable cultural gem that contributes to the City's claim to be "an arts hub" and that enriches the lives of those who live in the community or visit. To compare it to the local airport that was sold to private interests is totally misplaced in terms of who has access to the gallery and what it contributes to our quality of life and the City's attractiveness as a tourist destination.
Given the recent closure of the gallery for renovations, it's not surprising that attendance figures and proceeds from the gift shop are down. Even with the gallery reopening, the elevator project continues to severely limit the functioning of the gift shop.
We are extremely fortunate the City is home to an art gallery of such high calibre. I can't imagine living in the community without it.
