Letter: 'Fight Ford' Demonstrations Are Growing Across Grey-Bruce and Ontario
Resident Tamara Sargent writes in on the growing "Fight Ford" demonstrations, including a May 30 Owen Sound gathering of about 55 people outside MPP Vickers' office.
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
To the Editor,
Across Ontario, “Fight Ford” demonstrations have expanded into a coordinated series of actions now taking place in more than 60 communities. Beginning in February with fewer than a dozen locations, the movement has grown as residents organize locally to raise concerns about healthcare, affordability, education, labour conditions, and public services.
In Grey-Bruce, this growth was reflected on Saturday, May 30, when approximately 55 people gathered in Owen Sound outside MPP Paul Vickers’ constituency office. The turnout marked the largest local gathering to date and reflects increasing community engagement in recent months.
Participants assembled for a peaceful demonstration focused on shared concerns about provincial policy and its impact on local communities, including healthcare funding, affordability, labour conditions, and environmental protection. Concerns were also raised regarding Bill 5 and its potential impacts on Indigenous sovereignty.
Bill 5 represents a significant rollback of protections that Ontarians rely on. It weakens environmental safeguards, fast-tracks mining and development projects with reduced oversight, and limits meaningful consultation with Indigenous communities, undermining their rights and sovereignty.
Critics argue that this legislation prioritizes corporate interests over people, land, and water. It risks ecological damage, sidelines First Nations voices, and opens the door to unsafe and less accountable development practices.
The Owen Sound event included a speaker from OPSEU, who spoke about ongoing local labour actions and support for workers currently on strike, as well as a speaker from Fair Vote Canada, who addressed electoral reform and the importance of ensuring every vote carries equal weight.

MPP Paul Vickers had been invited to attend but was unable to do so. Organizers continue to welcome participation from elected representatives at future events as part of ongoing efforts to encourage open dialogue between constituents and decision-makers.
The next Owen Sound demonstration will take place on Saturday, June 27 at 9:00 a.m. outside MPP Vickers’ constituency office. In Meaford, a separate gathering will be held the same day at 12:00 p.m. outside Meaford Hall.
