Letter: Council Would Be Wise to Hire Jim Hutton as Budget Consultant
Victoria Tichbourne expected there would be pushback on Hutton's suggestion to close the art gallery after a previous Council's taxpayer-funded bailout.
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Again, it’s great to be kept up to date with this issue.
Everything Jim Hutton says makes sense. I know there would be lots of pushback on the art gallery issue, as it’s been considered a sacred cow for quite some time. The council at the time made a massive mistake in bailing them out when they made their own mess a few years ago, and the taxpayers have been on the hook for that ever since.
If it can’t sustain itself, maybe we shouldn’t have it… gasp!
There is no proof that the tourists it supposedly draws here warrant the cost to local taxpayers. I’ve yet to see numbers that substantiate that.
Our water bills are already sky-high and going higher. Is this tax transfer one of the reasons or will they now go higher yet? When will the Council understand that there is only one taxpayer and, yes, they are the same ones who use water?
I believe the smartest thing Council could do is to hire Jim Hutton as their budget consultant on a pro tempore basis at a nominal rate, if he’s willing to do it – and then actually work with him.
Parity with a community like Cobourg should be our goal.
