Lest We Forget: Remembering the African Canadian Servicemen from Grey County is a testament to those young Black Grey County men who served their country during the conflicts of the 20th century. Faced with exclusionary and racist practices, their contributions to the war effort were largely unrecorded until now.
Lest We Forget documents dozens of Black Grey County veterans, many with photographs and short biographies gathered from family members.
Author Bonita Johnson deMatteis had been told her grandfather and her father had served in WWI and WWII, but she could find little evidence of this. Black veterans from Grey County were just not in the history books.
For over two decades she has searched for their stories and now has gathered as much as she could find into this important new book.
Lest We Forget ($20) will be launched at 2:30pm Saturday February 21 at the British Methodist Episcopal Church, 245 11th Street West, in Owen Sound.
