Leadership Transition at Chippewas of Nawash as Chief Johnston Resigns for Health Reasons
Chief Ogimaa Kwe Darlene Johnston has resigned for health reasons. Head Councillor Jessica Keeshig-Martin will serve as Acting Chief during transition.

The Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation has announced the immediate resignation of Ogimaa Kwe (Chief) Darlene Johnston, citing medical reasons.
In a statement released Monday, the First Nation Council said Johnston made the decision with “profound regret,” and emphasized that her health and well-being were at the heart of her choice to step down. Her resignation is effective immediately.
In a written message to community members, Johnston said:
“Aanii dear community members.
I am writing to let you know that today I resigned from my position as your Chief, effective immediately, due to medical reasons. In my absence, several Councillors have taken turns serving as Acting Chief. I thank them for demonstrating their commitment to our community by doing so.
It has been my honour to have served you, even for such a short period of time. I will continue to serve our community in my personal capacity as soon as I am able to do so.

In their release, Nawash Council acknowledged Johnston’s leadership during “ongoing legal battles and the many challenges we have faced fighting for our rights,” noting that her efforts have strengthened the Nation and advanced work on behalf of future generations.
They extended “heartfelt appreciation for her service and wish her well,” while also requesting that members respect Johnston’s privacy.
To ensure continuity, Head Councillor Jessica Keeshig-Martin will serve as Acting Chief while Chief and Council determine a longer-term path forward. No timeline for further decisions has been announced.
The Chippewas of Nawash are located on the Saugeen (Bruce) Peninsula, and are one of two Anishinaabe First Nations that make up the Saugeen Ojibway Nation.
