Fun fact: Of the 2,000 articles The Owen Sound Current has published to date, nearly 100 have been letters to the editor.

That’s something we’re proud of because when we launched this publication, one of our core goals was to amplify community voices. Your perspectives, concerns, and lived experiences are an essential part of how local journalism should work.

Letters to the editor do more than just share opinions. They document what’s happening in our community and what matters to you in a given moment. They share knowledge, spark healthy debate, raise awareness—and sometimes, they even inspire action.

That last part is key. A well-timed letter can create momentum around a local issue or spotlight something others hadn’t noticed.

So what makes a strong letter to the editor?

Keep it focused. The most effective letters are typically 500 words or fewer—not because we’re saving space (we're online!) but because we respect our readers' time, and a focused letter tends to make a stronger impact.

A few tips:

  • Stick to one key message or topic.

  • Think about what lesson you want people to take away, or what action you hope they’ll consider, and make sure you’ve included the info needed for them to do that.

  • And always include your name and the town or municipality you’re from—we don’t publish anonymous letters except in very rare cases, and only at the editor’s discretion.

Got something to say? We want to hear it. Send your letter (up to 500 words) to: owensoundcurrenteditor@gmail.com.

Let’s keep the conversation going.
