Hydro One Grant to Power New Wetland Education Program for Local Schools
A $25,000 grant from Hydro One will support Grey Sauble’s new student program on wetlands, wildlife, and climate resilience, launching in spring 2026.
Grey Sauble Conservation Authority is launching a new environmental education program focused on wetland science, thanks to a $25,000 grant from Hydro One’s Energizing Life Community Fund.
The program, Wetland Education for a Resilient Future, is set to begin in spring 2026 and is now open to teachers across the Grey Sauble watershed who would like to bring their class.
Designed for multiple grade levels, the program aligns with Ontario’s elementary and secondary science curriculum and offers a hands-on approach to studying biodiversity, ecosystems, and climate resilience.
Students will explore wetlands starting with small aquatic organisms like macroinvertebrates, then trace ecological connections to species at risk, including turtles and other wildlife.
The program also introduces the role wetlands play in protecting communities, including flood control, pollutant filtration, and carbon storage.
Field trips will take place at various Grey Sauble properties selected for their ecological diversity and accessibility. The Hydro One grant will help fund program development, education materials, school outreach, and subsidized costs—including bussing—to remove financial barriers for participation.
Grey Sauble Conservation Authority says the goal is to empower students to see how wetlands support everything from local species to global systems, while inspiring long-term environmental stewardship.
Educators interested in participating are encouraged to contact Grey Sauble at 519-376-3076 or education@greysauble.on.ca.
