Grey Bruce OPP Seize One Kilogram of Fentanyl, Charge Two From Owen Sound and Meaford
A May investigation led to a Highway 10 traffic stop and searches in Owen Sound and Meaford; two accused were remanded into custody.
Two people face drug trafficking charges after Grey Bruce OPP seized about one kilogram of suspected fentanyl during an investigation that began in May, police said.
Officers with the Grey Bruce Community Street Crime Unit stopped a vehicle on Highway 10 at Collingwood Street in the Municipality of Grey Highlands at about 8:20 p.m. on July 6, according to a police release. Two people were arrested without incident, and officers seized a package of suspected fentanyl from the vehicle. The OPP West Region Emergency Response Team and West Region Canine Unit assisted.
The following day, the street crime unit executed two search warrants at a residence on 6th Avenue West near 28th Street West in Owen Sound and one at a building on Grey Road 12 in the Municipality of Meaford.
Police said the searches and the traffic stop yielded 1,001 grams of suspected fentanyl, 8.4 grams of suspected methamphetamine and $30,000 in what the force described as offence-related property.
The OPP estimated the fentanyl’s street value at $250,000 and the methamphetamine’s at $850, and said the fentanyl amounted to roughly 10,000 street-level doses based on a dose of 0.1 grams. The substances have not been confirmed through laboratory testing. Police did not explain how the street value was calculated, and such estimates are not independently verified.
Grey Bruce OPP Detachment Commander Inspector Marla Barfoot described the seizure as a major disruption to drug trafficking in the region and said the force would continue to target those involved.
