Grey Bruce OPP Advise Against Non-Essential Travel Thursday Due to Snow Squalls
Grey Bruce OPP is warning of up to 40 cm of snow and dangerous driving conditions on Thursday, advising residents to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.
Snow squalls are expected across Grey and Bruce counties on Thursday, November 27, and the Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are advising residents to avoid non-essential travel as conditions may quickly become dangerous.
Environment Canada is forecasting up to 40 centimetres of snowfall in some areas. Sudden whiteouts, low visibility, and rapidly deteriorating road conditions are likely, particularly on open highways and rural routes.
The OPP is urging drivers to plan ahead, avoid travel if possible, and prepare for emergencies.
Listen to this report from Grey Bruce OPP:
If travel is unavoidable, police recommend allowing extra time, ensuring your vehicle is winter-ready, and packing an emergency kit with warm blankets, food, water, and a fully charged phone.
Drivers are also reminded to obey all road closures and detours, as these may be issued with little warning during the storm. Ignoring a police-ordered closure is illegal and can result in fines or charges under the Highway Traffic Act.
To stay informed, drivers should check both Ontario 511, which provides province-wide highway and emergency road condition updates, and Municipal 511, which Grey Bruce OPP now uses to post emergency road closures.
Municipal 511 integrates with real-time navigation apps like Google Maps and Waze, increasing the likelihood that closures will appear directly in drivers’ GPS systems. Police stress that Municipal 511 and Ontario 511 are separate systems, and neither includes all closure types on its own. Checking both gives the most complete picture.
Grey Bruce OPP Now Posting Emergency Road Closures to Municipal 511
Motorists in Grey and Bruce counties will now have a new way to stay informed about emergency road closures, as the local Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachment begins posting police-ordered closures to the Municipal 511 platform.
Grey Bruce OPP will also continue posting updates on social media, including X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram.
It’s important to note that local radio stations, news outlets, and social media users can only share road closure updates as quickly as they receive and verify the information, typically from 511 platforms or police sources. As a result, radio and news websites (including this one) may not reflect changes in real-time.
Police say the safest option, if possible, is to postpone travel until the snow squalls have passed and conditions improve.
