It’s International Women’s Day! Considering World Book Day was only yesterday, the women behind this independent publication are having a great week.
How will you celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women today?
The good news is that there’s no wrong way to do it. This year’s IWD theme is ‘Inspire Inclusion,’ and there are countless ways to get involved.
“Celebrate women's achievement. Raise awareness about discrimination. Take action to drive gender parity. IWD belongs to everyone, everywhere. Inclusion means all IWD action is valid,” the official website states.
Women’s rights are human rights, and accelerating gender equality benefits humanity as a whole. The International Women’s Day movement has been going strong since 1911 for that reasons and today, it touches every corner of the globe – including ours.
The Ginger Press, publisher of The Owen Sound Current, is hosting a breakfast with guest speaker and investigative journalist Laura Robinson this morning (pre-registration required). Admission is by donation, and 100% of the money collected will go to the legal fund for the Lake Babine First Nations people and their fight for justice at the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal. Laura's talk will focus on "the case in London and what's been going on for decades in hockey towns."
Cobble Beach and the Owen Sound Chamber of Commerce are co-hosting an evening of inspiration, networking, and philanthropy featuring local business women speakers and live music by Paige Warner.
Business to Bruce and Women’s House Serving Bruce and Grey hosted ‘Count Her In: Accelerating Gender Equality Through Economic Empowerment’ last night at the Klages Mill and Garden in Chesley.
And a local author will share one of her stories, which was longlisted in the CBC Nonfiction Writing Contest in 2023, at a private event today in Toronto. We’ll bring you more on that next week.
The cumulative effect of many small actions is great impact. How will you make our corner of the world a little more diverse, equitable, and inclusive today – and for tomorrow?
