Happy Friday, Readers, and welcome to 2026!

Earlier this week, we conducted an open community poll:

Of the 175 responses received:

  • 63% believe the City of Owen Sound should prioritize affordable housing and homelessness as a top issue.

  • 22% want to see more downtown and small business support from the City.

  • Snow clearing, climate issues, and public transit shared 16% of the vote.

Sue Corbett, a resident of a neighbouring municipality who visits Owen Sound often, submitted this feedback outside of the poll:

“All five of those points looking forward for Owen Sound are very important, and the Climate issues seem to tie into the Snow Clearing & Winter Maintenance, especially when I need to go to your city for appointments, etc.”

Resident Ken Jones shared this feedback outside of the poll, as well:

“City challenges are made difficult due to a lack of leadership. Many in the community have expressed, in different ways, their concerns on a variety of issues that affect fiscal and operational matters pertaining to the City of Owen Sound.

There has been an obvious lack of accountability, transparency, and communications — all of which have been exasperated by a reluctance to involve public input. Questionable actions and inactions by a number of council members, as well as some senior city staff, are seen as a result of poor leadership.

I feel it is important to remind city taxpayers that they will have an opportunity to make needed changes at next year’s municipal election.”

We will continue to discuss in editorials and community polls, and welcome Letters to the Editor on these issues and others that matter to you. Submit yours to owensoundcurrenteditor@gmail.com
