Earth Day falls on Monday this year and while there will be much to celebrate then, you’ll want to get downtown on Saturday for a variety of events being held in different Owen Sound venues.
Owen Sound’s Earth Day Celebration is put on by a group of local volunteers called Earth Day Grey-Bruce, and this is their third year. The epicentre of the activity is 1st Ave West between 8th Street and 9th Street, which will be closed to traffic for the day. The event kicks off at 11am with a Water Ceremony by the bandshell, with Elder Shirley John from Saugeen First Nation.
From there, you have your choice of concurrent events happening at the band shell, the gym at St. Andrew’s Church, Owen Sound & Borth Grey Union Public Library, and the TOM.
At 2pm, the Durham Sauntering Band will lead a parade around the Sydenham River, and all are welcome to join. Meet back at the Band Shell for a concert by Jaden Grahlman, followed by local youth bands.
If you’re looking for inspiration to get out and enjoy more of our local environment, check out this upcoming author talk on Monday, too.
Nicola Ross, author of the Loops & Lattes hiking guides, will be at The Ginger Press at 2:00pm on Monday, April 22, to discuss her latest book, 40 Days & 40 Hikes: Loving the Bruce Trail One Loop at a Time. Complete with maps and hiking notes, this new book describes her end-to-end (sort of) adventure on the Bruce Trail.
Nicola covered over 900km, mostly following Canada's longest marked trail, but in her own creative way with 40 cleverly crafted day loops. There’s no charge to attend this event. Autographed copies of 40 Days & 40 Hikes ($26.95) can be reserved at 519 376-4233.
