Flood Watch Issued for Main Saugeen River and Tributaries in West Grey
A Flood Watch has been issued for the Main Saugeen River and tributaries in West Grey, with increased flooding risks due to frazil ice and slush blockages near Durham.
The Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority (SVCA) has upgraded its previous Flood Outlook to a Flood Watch for the Main Saugeen River and its tributaries in the Municipality of West Grey. The advisory is in effect until Monday, January 20, 2025, at 4:30 p.m.
Recent lake-effect snow squalls have resulted in significant slush accumulation along the Main Saugeen River. This has partially blocked the channel between the Durham Upper Dam and Durham Middle Dam, causing water levels to rise below McGowan Falls.
Although the snow squalls have subsided, the forecasted temperature drop is likely to generate frazil ice, potentially leading to further blockages and localized flooding.
Increased Risk of Flooding in Durham Area
Frazil ice, which forms when open water comes into contact with extremely cold air, is a common phenomenon in Ontario watercourses. It can contribute to localized high-water conditions, particularly in areas like Durham, which are especially vulnerable.
As a precaution, the Durham Upper Dam walkway and trail between the Upper Dam and Middle Dam have been closed for public safety. Residents are advised to avoid the area until further notice.
Ongoing Monitoring and Public Safety Efforts
SVCA said they are actively working with Municipality of West Grey staff to prioritize public safety. SVCA continues to provide real-time flood forecasting updates to municipal staff, who remain on alert to respond if conditions worsen.
The Flood Watch is a proactive measure to ensure public safety and readiness in the event of rising water levels. SVCA will continue to monitor the situation closely and issue updates as necessary.
