The City’s Operations Committee discussed snow removal standards at their meeting last night after Council and staff heard community concerns about inaccessible sidewalks and crosswalks in school zones and core pedestrian areas. City staff reported that the Significant Weather Event designation is still in effect, the City does not have the resources to clear snow any faster, and residents should expect work on sidewalks to be completed in a week, as long as there is no further snow.
After a brief conversation focused on how difficult and inconsiderate members of the public can be, Deputy Mayor Scott Greig redirected the discussion to the very real safety issues when people are forced to walk on busy roadways. He asked how snow clearing is prioritized and questioned why, when we have four sidewalk plows compared to two in the past, main sidewalks are not being cleared as they have been previously. Staff informed the committee that road clearing and intersection sightlines are prioritized before sidewalk plows can be manned. Greig instructed staff to reprioritize and ensure the sidewalk plows we have are in use. You can watch the video of the discussion beginning at 01:29:00 of the meeting here.
