Emery Bridge in Georgian Bluffs Reopens After $2.2M Full Replacement
Emery Bridge on Church Sideroad West has reopened following a $2.2M replacement project by Georgian Bluffs, restoring direct access for residents and local farms.

Emery Bridge, a vital rural crossing in the former Township of Sarawak, has officially reopened following a complete replacement, restoring local access that had been disrupted for nearly two years.
The bridge, located on Church Sideroad West and spanning Indian Creek, was closed in early 2023 due to significant structural deterioration. Built in the 1950s, the single-lane concrete bridge had reached the end of its service life, with failure in both its deck and abutments prompting a full closure.
Construction on the replacement began in the summer of 2025 and was completed in early December.
The new single-lane bridge removes the previous 9-tonne load limit, allowing larger vehicles—especially agricultural equipment—to cross safely without lengthy detours via Grey Road 1.
The $2.2 million project was funded through the Township of Georgian Bluffs’ capital budget and road bridge reserves. Design and engineering costs accounted for $396,000, with the remainder covering construction.
The municipality had explored alternatives, including permanent closure and a two-lane replacement. However, permanent closure was dismissed due to strong opposition from the community, and the two-lane option was deemed less feasible due to higher costs and environmental concerns.
The selected single-lane design was considered the most cost-effective and practical solution to meet local transportation and safety needs.
Reopening the bridge is expected to significantly benefit area residents and farm operations by restoring a key access route and improving overall road safety.
The Township thanked residents for their patience during the extended closure and construction process.
