A midday collision involving a police cruiser brought a brief traffic disruption to downtown Owen Sound on Thursday, after a civilian vehicle rear-ended the cruiser at a red light. No injuries were reported.
According to Owen Sound Police, the incident occurred around 12:20 p.m. at the intersection of 9th Avenue East and 8th Street East — a busy crossing near schools, businesses, and residential buildings.
The officer was stopped at the light when a vehicle struck the cruiser from behind.
Police say the driver of the civilian vehicle was charged with careless driving under the Highway Traffic Act. The driver was not named, and police did not release further details about their identity or the extent of vehicle damage.
A photo released by police shows an Owen Sound Police Service pickup truck and what appears to be a light blue SUV or crossover at the scene.
The police statement included a general reminder for motorists to remain attentive and maintain a safe following distance, especially at intersections where traffic frequently stops and starts.
Police have not indicated whether the cruiser involved was damaged or taken out of service for repair.
