Driver Charged After Grey Bruce OPP Officer Struck by Passing Car's Mirror During Traffic Stop
A Hamilton driver faces charges after allegedly failing to move over and striking an OPP officer during a Meaford traffic stop, then failing to remain at the scene.
A Grey Bruce OPP officer suffered minor injuries after being struck by a passing vehicle during a roadside traffic stop on Highway 26 earlier this week.
The incident occurred around 8:44 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5, 2025, near Algonquin Drive in the Municipality of Meaford. According to police, the officer was speaking with a driver during a routine traffic stop when an eastbound vehicle passed by without moving over or slowing down.
The vehicle’s passenger-side mirror struck the officer, and the driver did not stop at the scene.
The individual is now facing multiple charges under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act, including:
Failing to report an accident
Failing to remain at the scene
Careless driving
Failing to slow down and proceed with caution for an emergency vehicle
Police did not specify how long it took to locate and identify the driver following the incident. No details were provided on whether police used surveillance footage, witness reports, or other methods to track down the driver.
The officer was treated for minor injuries and is expected to recover. Police did not specify whether the officer was taken to the hospital, returned to duty, or is off work recovering.
Ontario’s “Move Over” law requires drivers to slow down and, when safe, move into another lane when approaching stopped emergency vehicles with flashing lights. The legislation is in place to protect police officers, paramedics, tow truck operators, and others who work along roadsides.
Violating the law can lead to fines, demerit points, and increased risk of injury or death for roadside workers.
