CWHC Launches SPECS Program to Enhance Senior Wellbeing through Cultural Engagement
Social Prescriptions Engage Cultural Seniors (SPECS) program is an initiative designed to enrich the lives of seniors in Owen Sound
MEDIA RELEASE
The Community Waterfront Heritage Centre (CWHC) is pleased to announce the launch of the Social Prescriptions Engage Cultural Seniors (SPECS) program, an initiative designed to enrich the lives of seniors in Owen Sound and surrounding areas by connecting them with cultural and community activities.
Funded by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors program, SPECS is rooted in the concept of social prescribing, an initiative that links individuals with non-medical support and activities in their community to improve overall well-being.
Through SPECS, seniors will have the opportunity to participate in various cultural experiences, including local history presentations at the CWHC, tours at the Billy Bishop Museum, art exhibits at the Tom Thomson Art Gallery, afternoon movies at the library, and more.
Most activities are free of charge, and some cultural events not directly funded by the program may be offered at a reduced rate for seniors.
“We’re excited to introduce the SPECS program to our community, creating opportunities for older adults to engage with local culture and connect with others,” said Jan Chamberlain, Chair of the Community Waterfront Heritage Centre. “These activities are designed to support well-being, foster connections, and offer enriching experiences that contribute to a fulfilling life.”
The SPECS program is designed to address the social determinants of health, recognizing that well-being is influenced by more than just physical health. Seniors who engage in the program can benefit from enhanced social connections, opportunities for learning, and active involvement in the community.
Older adults interested in participating can connect with a link worker who will guide them to suitable activities and programs that align with their interests and needs. To get started, individuals can call 519-371-3333 or email specs@waterfrontheritage.ca.
