Coach Bus Driver Charged Twice in 12 Hours for Ignoring Highway 21 Closure During Storm
OPP say they've charged a coach bus driver twice in less than 12 hours for driving on closed Highway 21 during severe weather conditions in South Bruce.
A coach bus driver was charged twice within 12 hours for driving on a closed section of Highway 21 during severe weather, according to South Bruce OPP.
The first incident occurred late Monday night, around 10:30 p.m., when officers stopped a bus travelling along Highway 21 despite the roadway being officially closed due to dangerous conditions.
The bus had become stuck during the attempt. Police charged the driver with “drive on closed highway” under the Highway Traffic Act.
Several hours later, around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, police received calls from concerned passengers reporting that the same bus was once again travelling on the closed highway.
Officers located the vehicle in Tiverton and issued a second charge to the driver for the same offence.
Highway 21 was closed due to hazardous winter weather affecting travel safety in the area.
OPP remind all drivers that road closures are enforced for public safety and that disobeying them can result in fines and further risk to both passengers and emergency responders.
