City: Downtown Owen Sound Foot Traffic Steady & Vacancy Rates Improving
City of Owen Sound cites web actions, new businesses opening, and social media reach as evidence of 'River District Action Plan' success.
MEDIA RELEASE
Ongoing efforts and focus on increasing brand recognition, promotion and experience development in the Owen Sound River District have made strides since 2020. Most recent analytics, reported to the River District Board of Management in September, show that the vacancy rate of commercial business space in the River District continues to improve occupancy rates.
In addition to the 3% decrease in vacancy since implementation (from 12% to 9%), several building permits have been issued. Eight new businesses have opened in the River District this year, and pedestrian counters reflect that foot traffic on the City’s main streets remains stable.
One of the River District's signature events, the Hottest Street Sale, saw an increase of 1,477 pedestrians (over 2023) for the one-day event in 2024.
Other data reflects growing interest and engagement with the River District online, including the following increases since last year at this time:
owensoundriverdistrict.ca has seen over 170,300 actions since 2023, an increase of 40.64%;
Facebook shows a 94.8% increase in page reach
Instagram shows a 713.6% increase in page reach
In 2020, the City partnered with the River District Board of Management on the River District Action Plan, which lays out 4 main pillars:
1. River District Branding
2. River District Management
3. River District Experience Development and,
4. River District Promotion.
By focusing on these four areas, the River District Board of Management and the City work toward the goal of a strong and vibrant River District.
The three-year River District Action Plan ends in late 2024. The River District Board of Management plans to update this Action Plan to ensure the work continues to align with the goals of the River District businesses, residents, and visitors.
Agendas, minutes, and information about the River District Board of Management meetings are available on the City of Owen Sound website. Agendas are released on Fridays before the meetings. Meetings take place at City Hall in Council Chambers, and the public and business community are welcome to attend.
