Chippewas of Nawash Elects New Band Council for 2025–2027 Term
Darlene Johnston acclaimed as Chief; nine councillors elected following August 1 vote.
The Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation has confirmed its new leadership following a band election held on Friday, August 1, 2025. The results were published in an official Statement of Votes signed by the electoral officer and posted on the Nation’s website.
Darlene Johnston was acclaimed as Chief, with no other candidates contesting the position.
The election for band councillor saw 28 candidates vying for nine available seats. According to the certified results, the following individuals were elected:
Jessica Keeshig-Martin – 299 votes
Darren Johnston – 243 votes
Janine M. Manning – 215 votes
Gregory Nadjiwon – 214 votes
Anthony (Tony) Chegahno – 210 votes
Paul Jones – 202 votes
Norma Tobey – 201 votes
Roszella “Prin” Johnston – 165 votes
Nicholas (Nick) Saunders – 162 votes
A total of 12 ballots were rejected during the vote for councillor.
Gregory Nadjiwon, who previously served as Chief, was elected to council after not seeking re-election in the top role.
The election was conducted in accordance with the Indian Band Election Regulations, and the count was certified by Electoral Officer Vaughn Johnston.
The new council will serve a two-year term, as per the community’s governance structure.
