Chi-Cheemaun Ferry to Extend 2025 Sailing Season by One Week
Owen Sound Transportation Company has extended the Chi-Cheemaun ferry season to October 26, 2025, with special cruises, fundraising events, and arts programming planned throughout.
The Owen Sound Transportation Company (OSTC) has announced that the 2025 sailing season for the MS Chi-Cheemaun will begin on May 2 and conclude on October 26, extending the season by one week compared to previous years.
The seasonal ferry service, which connects Tobermory and South Baymouth on Manitoulin Island, supports both community travel and tourism across Georgian Bay and Lake Huron.
A number of public sailings and events are scheduled for the season, including:
Spring Repositioning Cruise (May 1): This passenger-only voyage from Owen Sound Harbour to Tobermory will mark the ferry’s return to service. Tickets are already sold out. Onboard fundraising during the cruise will benefit the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation – Health Centre.
Chi-Cheemaun Festival Cruise (June 14): A fireworks cruise is scheduled in partnership with the Tobermory Chi-Cheemaun Festival Committee. The evening includes a meal service and fireworks (weather permitting). Additional details will be made available by OSTC.
Fall Repositioning Cruise (October 27): The final passenger cruise of the year will see the ferry return to Owen Sound for winter berth. Proceeds from onboard fundraising will support the Canadian Mental Health Association – Grey Bruce. Tickets will go on sale in the fall.
OSTC says it will continue offering programming through its Play for Passage series, featuring guest speakers, musicians, and artists onboard throughout the season. The Sail Through Time exhibit, an onboard display of archival photos and artifacts, will also remain available to passengers.
Chi-Cheemaun sailings accommodate both vehicle and walk-on passengers. The ferry has capacity for larger vehicles, including motorhomes and commercial transport. Reservations and information are available at www.ontarioferries.com or by phone at 1-800-265-3163.
First launched in 1974, the MS Chi-Cheemaun has carried an estimated 10 million passengers and 3 million vehicles over the course of more than 24,000 voyages. The ferry is operated by OSTC, a provincial agency that manages transportation services in several regions of Ontario.
