A Bluewater District School Board (BWDSB) educator from Hillcrest Elementary School in Owen Sound is being honoured for her transformative work in environmental education, reconciliation, and student voice.
Teacher Edie Duncan has been selected as the 2026 recipient of the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) Outstanding Service Award for the Western Region.
According to OPSBA, this prestigious award is presented annually to recognize one school board staff and/or volunteers from each region, whose service directly advances OPSBA’s mission, vision, and strategic priorities at their local school board, especially in advocacy, inclusion, equity, sustainability, and student well-being.
OPSBA cited several initiatives that Edie has led over the years, including land-based learning projects, such as maple syrup tapping, sustainability programs like Green Bin composting, and integrating Ojibway language and culture into daily classroom routines.
“Edie’s approach fosters inclusivity, empowers students to lead, and builds a strong sense of respect for the environment and Indigenous knowledge.
This award reflects her lasting impact on students, schools, and the broader community.
Recognizing local champions like Edie helps inspire others and affirms the values of equity, collaboration, and community engagement at the heart of public education.”

On Friday, May 15, BWDSB Chair Jane Thomson and Director of Education AJ Keene joined board and school staff, students, and families at Hillcrest’s traditional Family Friday celebration, where Edie was recognized and presented with a gift and award certificate.
Family Friday was the perfect environment to celebrate Edie’s accomplishments given that her nominator was a parent in attendance. Audience members got to witness firsthand Edie’s work and leadership in the classroom through Indigenous drumming, song, and speeches from Kindergarten students and other special helpers.

Following an introduction of the award and presentation of tokens of appreciation by Director Keene, Chair Thomson offered heartfelt remarks referencing her daughter’s memorable experiences as a student of Edie several years ago in Grade 2.
“I remember a field trip to her parents’ apple orchard in Neyaashiinigmiing where we were able to press apples with her dad and taste apple cider. Ms. Duncan seamlessly shared Indigenous knowledge 21 years ago and continues to do so today. So many students have benefited from having you as their teacher,” proudly shared Chair Thomson.
Congratulations to Edie on behalf of everyone at BWDSB!
