Bruce County Urges Drivers to Pack Emergency Kits as Winter Hits
Stay informed and travel safe this winter — check weather alerts before heading out and ensure your emergency kit is stocked and accessible.
With winter weather settling in across the region, Bruce County is urging residents to be prepared — not just at home, but also in their vehicles.
“Preparation doesn’t stop at home. It’s just as important when you’re on the road,” said Ray Lux, Bruce County’s Emergency Management Coordinator.
“First responders may face delays due to high call volumes or severe conditions. Make sure you can keep yourself and your family safe and warm until help arrives.”
Motorists are encouraged to keep an emergency kit in their vehicles in case they become stranded or delayed during poor weather conditions.
Recommended items include a blanket, warm clothing such as hats and gloves, snacks, water, a flashlight with extra batteries, a whistle, and a portable phone charger.
Other helpful tools to keep on hand include a snow shovel, ice scraper, booster cables, tow rope, a reflective safety triangle, and a high-visibility vest. Basic first aid supplies are also recommended.
Even short trips warrant preparation. Officials advise drivers to dress for the weather or bring winter gear in their vehicles — including boots and heavy coats — even if they prefer not to wear them while driving.
“You never know when conditions might change or when help could be delayed,” Lux added.
Emergency kits can be purchased at local retailers or built at home. Bruce County encourages residents to review their winter safety plans and learn more at www.brucecounty.on.ca/getprepared
