Brightshores Owen Sound Announces State-of-the-Art CT Scanner Now in Service
A state-of-the-art CT scanner is now operational at Owen Sound Hospital, strengthening stroke care and diagnostics across the region.
Brightshores Health System has announced that a new state-of-the-art Computed Tomography (CT) scanner is now in service at Owen Sound Hospital, providing faster, more precise imaging with improved patient comfort.
The scanner began serving patients earlier this week and will be phased in to full capacity over the coming days. Hospital officials say the upgrade will help meet the growing demand for advanced diagnostic imaging across Grey and Bruce counties.
“This investment in advanced diagnostic technology is an important step in enhancing the care we provide,” said Ann Ford, President and CEO of Brightshores. “The new CT scanner will allow us to serve patients across Grey Bruce more quickly and with even greater precision. We are grateful to our patients and families for their patience and support during the transition.”
CT imaging is widely used across hospital departments, including emergency care, inpatient units, and outpatient clinics. It is a critical diagnostic tool for detecting strokes, cancers, internal injuries, and infections.
Owen Sound Hospital serves as the district stroke centre for the region, and the new scanner is expected to play a key role in the regional stroke program. More than 16,000 CT procedures are performed each year across Brightshores hospitals.
“Medical imaging is often a crucial component in developing care plans for patients,” said Kathy Beattie, Director of Medical Imaging and Cardiology. “The new CT scanner enhances the image quality while decreasing the radiation exposure to patients, contributing to a more patient-centred care experience.”
Brightshores previously introduced a second CT scanner at Southampton Hospital in fall 2023. The Owen Sound upgrade was made possible through recent fundraising campaigns supported by hospital foundations and local donors.
