Attempt to Avoid RIDE Checkpoint Ends in Impaired Driving Charge
A driver who made a U-turn before an Owen Sound RIDE checkpoint was stopped and charged with impaired driving after failing breath tests, police say.
An impaired driving charge followed a late-night RIDE program in Owen Sound after a driver attempted to avoid a police checkpoint.
Owen Sound Police say the incident happened just after midnight on March 29, when officers were conducting a RIDE program on the city’s west side.
According to police, an officer observed a vehicle make a U-turn before reaching the checkpoint. The vehicle was then stopped several kilometres outside city limits.
After speaking with the driver, officers reported observing signs of impairment. Police also stated that empty alcohol containers were visible inside the vehicle.
The driver failed a roadside breath test and was arrested. At the Owen Sound Police Service station, two additional breath samples were taken, which police say measured approximately three times the legal limit.
A 37-year-old Owen Sound man has been charged with impaired operation and operating a vehicle with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in his blood. The charges have not been proven in court.
Police did not release the name of the accused.
His vehicle was impounded for seven days and his driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days.
He is scheduled to appear in court on May 5, 2026.
