Assaults, Drugs, Impaired Driving Among Weekend Arrests in Owen Sound
Owen Sound Police reported a busy weekend, with 100 calls for service and arrests related to assaults, weapons, drugs, impaired driving, and theft.
Owen Sound Police say officers responded to 100 calls for service over the weekend, resulting in more than 30 criminal charges and several arrests.
Assault on officer during foot patrol
The weekend began Friday night, August 22, when an officer on foot patrol downtown observed a man drinking alcohol in public around 9 p.m. Police say when the officer directed him to stop, the man suddenly assaulted the officer. The officer’s injuries, if any, were not disclosed.
A 65-year-old Owen Sound man was arrested and charged with assaulting a peace officer and resisting arrest. Police did not release the man’s name. He was later released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court in September.
Knife assaults outside eastside business
In the early hours of Saturday, August 23, officers were called to an eastside business after reports of a man brandishing a knife and assaulting people. Police say two victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to Brightshores Health Services. Police did not release details about the specific location of the incident.
A 19-year-old Owen Sound man was arrested nearby and charged with two counts of assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. The suspect’s name was not released. He is due in court in September.
Drugs and stolen property seized
Later that same morning, officers located and arrested a 43-year-old man wanted on outstanding warrants. Police say their investigation led to the seizure of more than 30 grams of cocaine, 10 grams of fentanyl, and stolen property. They did not specify what the stolen property was.
The man faces additional charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000. The accused’s name was not released. He was held for a bail hearing before being released to return to court next month.
Impaired driving charge
On Sunday, August 24, at about 2 a.m., an officer stopped a vehicle in the 500 block of 10th Street East. Police say the 19-year-old female driver failed a roadside test and was arrested for impaired operation.
The woman’s name was not released. She was released with a September court date. Her vehicle was impounded for seven days, and her licence suspended for 90 days.
Trespassing and attempted theft
That same morning around 4 a.m., officers arrested a 55-year-old man who they say was trespassing at an eastside residence and attempting to steal from a vehicle.
Police say the man, who has no fixed address, was already under a release order for similar offences. He was held for a bail hearing and remanded into custody. Police did not release the man’s name.
Overall numbers
By the end of the weekend, Owen Sound Police reported 32 Criminal Code offences and the execution of seven arrest warrants.
