See what's happening in the local art scene in July and August, from TOM and Durham Art Gallery's dual exhibit to the Windows of Wiarton, with plenty of exhibit openings across Grey and Bruce.
COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTION
Somehow we’re already a week into July, and I have been spending more time in my own art studio than exploring others! So, with the passing of time being what it is, this writer offers up a combined July-August roundup before more time eclipses in the beauty that is summer arts season in Grey Bruce.
Owen Sound & Durham
The Tom Thomson Gallery has done a mid year change up and is currently offering up three exhibitions.
Tú eres mi otro yo: Mundos, Mundo, Worlds from Michelle Peraza running until October 3, 2026, Forecast – June to January running until January 2, 2027, and the Tom has joined forces with Durham Art Gallery, as well. The dual exhibit, Markle: content is just a glimpse, showcases the work of Robert Markle and runs until September 12, 2026. Markle’s opening at the Tom is this coming Saturday, July 11, 2 - 4pm.
Durham Art Gallery is also hosting free arts activities for kids every Wednesday from 1 - 2:30pm from July 15 to August 26.
The Owen Sound Artists Co-op will host the Square Foot Show in July and August, and over at Grey Gallery Tree Songs, from artist Jane Burns, runs from July 9 through August 8. Opening reception and artist meet and greet Friday July 10 from 5 to 7pm.
Wiarton
In Wiarton, Deep Water Gallery is showcasing work from Kate Civero, Becky Comber, and Katherine Kennie, with Eastern Whisperssss curated by Elisabeth Heathfield. The show runs until July 25, with gallery hours Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11am to 4pm, or by appointment.
Throughout August, from the 1st through to the 29th, the gallery will host Elisabeth Heathfield’s Collage: A Conversation with Past Selves. An artists reception will be held Thursday August 20th from 7 to 9pm, all welcome.
Just up the hill and around the corner at 704 Gould Street, the Little MAD (Miniature Art and Design) Gallery has a fibre art exhibit underway, Outliers, from Betty Barrett.
Meanwhile the Wiarton and District Chamber of Commerce have sponsored Windows of Wiarton (W.o.W.) to bring bold, creative work to downtown Wiarton, hosted in five business windows. Featured artists, Christian Bernard Singer, Chris Malleck, Natalie Vanderzand, Meghan Fitzsimmons, and Candace Louise, have their pieces installed in shadow-box galleries, on display until October 12, 2026. An Artists reception takes place July 13th at 4pm, at the Deep Water Gallery. Ballots can be cast all summer long at 658 and 589 Berford Street for the community favourite.
Taken together, these public and grassroots initiatives offer up an accessible, walkable arts cluster that invites visitors to linger. A perfect summer stroll option, make sure to grab a cone from Lloyd’s for optimal vibes.

Closing Thoughts
It’s worth noting that public galleries prioritise access, education, local artists and public benefit: free or low-cost programming, youth classes, community exhibitions, and stewardship of cultural heritage. Commercial galleries prioritise sales and market-driven programming to support artists’ commercial careers.
While both are vital, public galleries anchor civic life — they ensure art is not only a commodity but a shared resource that builds social capital, supports inclusion, and spreads economic benefit across the community.
Take this as your call to action to support both whether you take this as a call to action to buy a piece from a local artist or use this summer’s momentum to back public art infrastructure by donating, volunteering or simply advocating for municipal support. The arts need you, and you need the arts!
